Breaking Down to Transform

“Early this morning, I watched the dining room being broken down and destroyed. It will take a few days, and then I’ll see the transformation. Sometimes life is just like that. It needs to be broken down and destroyed to strip away the bad things. When you let the old go, you become capable of seeing life from a brand-new perspective.”

That was a post I made on social media back in 2019. I had no idea that 2020 was right around the corner, bringing even greater transformations to the world.

The photo captured the store on Page Boulevard in Springfield, MA. The restoration of the building was just beginning, leaving behind its old retro look to make way for a fresh, modern, and elegant style.

For six years, I managed a BK restaurant in Chicopee, Massachusetts, transforming it into what I considered my absolute best up to that point. Better, highly tempting offers came along, but I said “no” to all of them. Until one day, I decided to make a change. I embraced the opportunity in a different way. I was confident that by participating in the building’s remodeling, I would also be renewing my leadership style.

That was when I embarked on a new journey and began savoring new victories. While the world was going into isolation, I was seeking tools to stay grounded and ready to face any obstacle.

Sometimes, that is all we really need: to look fear and insecurity straight in the eye. To throw away any lingering uncertainty. To break down barriers instead of building walls. To exchange the old for the new. To start over! Restart! Restore! Renew!

Tell me: what walls do you need to tear down so that new opportunities can arise?

If your heart is broken or your trust in someone has been shattered, perhaps picking up the pieces isn’t the best strategy. The truth is, certain things need to fall apart so that we can hold our heads high.

Shake off the dust, look at the ruins without guilt, and realize this: the renovation is scary, the noise is uncomfortable, and the mess feels overwhelming, but the final result is always worth it. Clear the ground of your heart. Your future is far too big to fit into the structures of your past.

Take a deep breath, grab your cup, and tell me: what are we going to start demolishing today?
